EPCs: Ignore At Your Peril
15 October 2008
It may come in as a surprise that nearly half of the carbon emissions in the UK come from domestic homes, that's even more than cars and planes! In a country where tackling climate change is becoming increasingly important, steps are being taken to become greener and more energy conscious. A measure which has been introduced to help us do so, is the Energy Performance Certificate, known as an EPC.
Since October 2008, whenever a property is built, sold or rented out, an EPC is required in order to assess it's energy efficiency on a scale from A to G, A having the lowest household fuel bills, and necessarily the happiest tenants! The charts produced look similar to those found on electrical equipment, such as fridges. EPCs are valid for 10 years, and also provide recommendations on how to improve the energy efficiency of properties, making them desirable in the long run for tenants and landlords alike.
