Area Guides: London
In the thick of it all is Covent Garden, which buzzes day and night with shows, restaurants and bars. Just to the north is Bloomsbury altogether more residential with some fine examples of imposing Georgian town houses. Clerkenwell bridges the gap between WC1 and Islington. Whilst Clerkenwell profits from its proximity and easy transport links to the City, Islington has a character all of its own with offers an enormous choice of upmarket bars, restaurants and shops. Just to the north of King's Cross is Camden, which attracts an altogether more adventurous crowd. Popular with students, it has much to offer in terms of lively night life and the open air and utterly absorbing Camden Market.
South of the river, Battersea and Wandsworth have an entirely pastoral feel. But life here is not just about making the most of delightful commons that bound the residential areas. Northcote Road has rightly earned its reputation as one of London's most appealing high streets with the best of retail and food available in abundance. Balham provides much of the appeal of it’s slightly more expensive neighbours, whilst Clapham borders the Common and has excellent tube connections to the City.
